Well Christmas and New Year has come and gone and we wish you all have had a great festive season with loved ones and family. For the Beho family it was no different Christmas presents, great company and a conga line leading us into the New Year.
The bush is very dry as we haven’t had rain for a while and the average temperatures in the low forties also don’t make things any easier. Still we have been nothing but blessed with the sightings we experienced over this period.
The elephants sightings have been getting better and better with most of the pools drying out they are back in the forest bellow the camp where there is a natural spring providing the much needed water. A couple of bulls are also in and around camp most days going about their day doing “gardening” as they go along. We still see wild dogs most days and their arrival in camp on a few occasions with guest enjoying that first cup of morning coffee, watching the dogs at the water hole quenching the thirst generated by their hyperness cannot go without mention.
I have been seeing a “new” male lion between the old airstrip and Kibonde road. He is very pretty and almost has a proper mane which is very reassuring as most other males have a Mohawk or no mane at all. Bibi and her pride are around the battlefields and move towards Tamlyn plane so we get to see them regularly as well. The young males in her pride will have to come to grips with their situation as this season they might be driven out of the group should the Musketeers come across them it is inevitable that this will happen , so we are looking forward to some behavioural inter-action in the near future.
With the water drying up rapidly we are seeing more and more “Swamp Monsters” hippos that lie in mud all day trying to stay cool and hydrated. The hippo banda population is also on the increase again seeing more hippos arrive daily as their pools have dried up.
The big rains are now waited for with great anticipation by all as the reserve will again be as lush and beautiful, decorated and adorned with flowers and butterflies and new life alike.
So as we await the promise of life the rain we wish you all a very prosperous 2014 and we hope to see you soon…….
