“I doubt whether the world holds for anyone a more soul-stirring surprise than the first adventure with ice cream.” ~ Heywood Broun
I don’t think you can be busy eating a creamy cold ice cream and be unhappy at the same time. It just doesn’t work together. It has some uplifting quality that just makes your soul sing and your heart expand to accommodate the new found delight. It is a pleasure that cannot be described to someone who has never had it.
We have received, not so long ago, a new ice cream machine. I have been waiting with anticipation to have it, and finally after many months it arrived. It travelled quite a long way to get here too. All the way from Italy to South Africa, then to Dar es Salaam, and then finally on a tiny little plane to get to us in the heart of the Selous.
“Ice cream is the perfect buffer, because you can do things in a somewhat lighthearted way. Plus people have an emotional response to ice cream; it’s more than just food. So I think when you combine caring, and eating wonderful food, it’s a very powerful combination.” ~ Jerry Greenfield
Oh, the possibilities! Whether it is a tart and zesty passion fruit sorbet to a rich and delectably dark chocolate ice cream, there is some sort of frozen treat to everyone’s liking. My personal favourite is a creamy lemon meringue ice cream. It has got all the traits of the ideal dessert. It is not cloyingly sweet, just piquant enough to be pleasing, it is rich but not too much, and then, because of the bits of meringue scattered through the matrix, a fantastic smooth texture with a little bit of crumble every now and again. Perfect!
“My advice to you is to not inquire why or whither, but just to enjoy the ice cream while it is on your plate.” ~ Thornton Wilder
Out here in the sticks, there is nothing more refreshing than having an icy scoopful on a hot summer afternoon.
