Beho Beho Bushblog – Salum – 29th July

Salum Mpapa

Our water hole has been very busy now. Impala and Warthog are day drinkers but Water bucks, Hyena, old buffalo bulls, Civet and Hippo are night drinkers. Elephants come in at any time. We have two families of Elephants with young calves that join us almost every day.  We have two herds of Water buck each is more than ten strong coming every evening. Hippos are queuing and sometimes more than six are drinking at one time.

Three nights ago a male Leopard was calling a lot in the Msine valley. I woke up in the morning with the mixed herd of Impala and Water buck. They were very skittish running between my house and Heribert’s house towards room five. I thought it might have been because of the Leopard. After half an hour I heard Werner on the radio saying that he had seen Wild dogs just before the Airstrip ( Beho Beho International). That’s why all Impala from the Airstrip where at the camp. When I went to pick up guest at the airstrip they were still there where the resident only sign is.

My evening drive was short because we went to watch the dogs but they were in the bushes. We decided to drive around the airstrip waiting for them to come out when it cooled. At the airstrip we saw Warthog, Impala, Wildebeest and nice family of six Elephant including two very young calves. We watched them for some time before we went and have our sundowner with the Wild dogs and this time they were on the road.

Great post, lots of exciting sightings!
I had a little question, is that a female elephant with the calf? I’m assuming so, but it seems to have temporal gland secretions. Do females have temporal gland secretions? I’ve found it quite hard to research.

Thank you Nick for nice question.Yes she is the female. Both Male and female secret Temporal gland. Temporal gland is secret fluid when the animal is not on the good condition, excited or under stress. While male in musth they secret the fluid but normal the gland will be swelling and they also dribble greenish urine that carries a powerful odor which females can be attracted.
    Thank you.
    Cheers!
